Purge out the old leaven.
6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.[a] 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
In this passage Paul is admonishing the Corinthian believers to deal with the evil in their midst by purging out the ‘old leaven’. There was an individual in their midst who appears to be a Christian but is living a very ungodly life and the church is actually puffed up and prideful and refusing to deal with him. Paul is rebuking the church for their stubbornness and tells them to turn this person over to Satan to be destroyed and thereby purge the evil from their midst. Churches and Christian organizations today need to purge the evil of sexual abuse from it’s midst. The sexual predators and those who are protecting them need to be ousted from all Christian organizations. Too often we feel powerless to change a situation but one of the blessings of living in freedom is that we can effect change. Believers need to stand up and say that we will no longer continue to tolerate leaders who ignore or excuse abuse. We could change our churches over night! literally. If we said to our leaders ‘ You will change” “You will deal with this sin” or we will purge you out of this church along with the offenders. If there is not enough people in a given church to effect that kind of change, the answer is actually quite easy….you leave the church and start a new church with other like minded Christians who will stand together. We have the power to change things but we must act now. Call a meeting with your pastor and insist on immediate results. Call or email groups like ‘Focus on the Family’ and let them know that if they continue to ignore the issue of abuse and the need to hold offenders accountable that you will stop your support. It is we the people who have the power in a democratic society and even in our churches. Obviously it is God who is ultimately is in control but He has given us the responsibility to act. That is why He says through the apostle Paul that the Corinthian believers were to cast out the evil person from their midst. Think of it. What would happen if believers who were committed to dealing with abuse started leaving their churches? If it is only one or two families…. maybe nothing but if it was four or five or maybe ten? What if churches started popping up all over that took a strong stand against abuse in all forms? Churches and Christian organizations would have no choice but to change or go under. So why are we waiting? Let’s vote with our feet and our voices. Let’s change things now, by the Grace of God. I am afraid that the pride and stubbornness of many of our leaders in Christian organizations is making it impossible to bring about the repentance and change that is needed. All those who refuse to deal with abuse in a Biblical manner must be purged out of our midst. Are you ready to say enough is enough? Are you ready to start one of the greatest movements of our time? It is time to tell our leaders “repent or be removed”.
