I Peter 2:5 “you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
We don’t usually think of the Church today as offering up sacrifices, but in this verse God is saying that believers are like living stones that form a spiritual house and that one of the things that we are to do in this house is to offer up ‘spiritual’ sacrifices.
Hebrews 13:15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. 16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
God mentions three types of sacrifices in these verses: Praise, doing good and sharing.
Philippians 4:18 “Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God.”
In this verse God mentions another acceptable sacrifice. The Philippian believers had sent Paul a care package that may have included money, food, clothes etc. We are not told the specific items but they are simply referred to as ‘things’.
Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”
In this passage we are told that our bodies are to be a living sacrifice.
The Church is a collective group of believers who are to be offering up a continual stream of ‘spiritual’ sacrifices and God tells us what are ‘acceptable’ sacrifices in these verses. These are all things that are wholesome and good and glorify God.
So lets ask ourselves the question….What are the sacrifices that the ‘Church’ is offering up today? Countless numbers of children are being raped and molested, domestic violence of every sort, the innocent victims of abuse are being robbed of justice by our church leaders….not the kind of sacrifices that God would deem ‘acceptable’ but it is what is being offered up to God week after week.
