This morning, GRACE (Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment) released a thoughtful, clear statement of empathetic support for victims and constructive solutions for changing Church systems that perpetuate abuse. The five-page statement from the Board of Directors addresses key systemic needs in four areas:
- Seminary education of pastors about maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Rigorous screening and selection of pastors or other church leaders who provide counseling.
- Implement checks and balances to minimize abusive situations.
- Implementing clear policies for responding to abusive conduct, including reporting abuse to the appropriate authorities, removing abusive pastors from any leadership role and, most importantly, supporting survivors.
